Selecting the best cement is completely based on materials you are using for a job. There is a hierarchy of cements, or luting materials. At the base of the pyramid, you will find the most common or conventional cements. Above that are self-adhesive cements that are typically resin based. It allows dentists to use conventional methods with a few of the advantages found in a pure resin cement. At the top are true-adhesive resin cements, which come with several components and steps to help the adhesive bond in the mouth.

At the top of the pyramid, the bond strength and fracture toughness are the highest, while these characteristics are lower at the bottom of the pyramid. Each cement is going to depend on the situation with type of restoration and materials different pieces are made of in the patient’s mouth.
